Top 10 Things That Steve Jobs Said

10 things that Steve Jobs saidThese are the top 10 things that Steve Jobs said prior to his death in 2011. In order to put them in context, you have to consider some of the game changing events in his life. From the initial choice to follow his dream and his heart and to not complete college, Steve was on a path that few of us would choose. Being rebuffed by both Atari and Hewlitt-Packard helped to give Jobs the impetus he needed to create Apple and eventually the Mac. By retaining control, he not only cemented his own destiny, he also assumed the mantle of responsibility for the direction that his company went in whether it was good or bad.

When Jobs was fired from Apple he took it hard, and it wasn’t until well after that, he saw the benefits of being let go, and revealed that he did his most creative work once he was set free to design whatever he wanted. He flouted his own axiom that little greatness in creativity comes from those that are in their thirties or fourties. And there is no doubt that the recognition of death as inevitable pushed Jobs at a speed and with a clarity that few of us will ever know. These 10 things that Steve Jobs said reflect that understanding and guide us to not take time for granted. The race is always on.

10 Things That Steve Jobs Said That Can Change Your World

change the world

1. Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool that I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.

2. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

3. Do you want to spend the rest of your life doing what you are doing, or do you want a chance to change the world?

4. It’s better to be a pirate than join the Navy.

5. I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.

6. Quality is more important that quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.

7. Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.

8. Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.

9. When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back.

10. Older people sit down and ask, ‘What is it?’ but the boy asks, ‘What can I do with it?’

11. Things don’t have to change the world to be important.

As you can clearly see, Steve looked at things differently. And it doesn’t hurt us to take a look at life through a different set of eyes. Of the 10 things that Steve Jobs said, which one resonated with you? For me it was number 9. No matter what you do, even if no one else will ever see it or know about it, still counts because you will know that it is there. I’m going to use that as a guide.

As the old song said, “Do what you do, do well.”
