Be a large breed dogwalker, only sit cats, find something that sets you apart from everyone else and do it EXTREMELY well.

2. Keep Track

This sounds ridiculously simple, but it really matters. Not just from a tax perspective (although there is that), but also because you want to be able to say that you have done this much of this and this much of that. It shows that you have experience and you also want to keep records for yourself of what something costs and how long it takes you to do, etc. If you don’t keep records you are forever guessing. Guessing is gambling and unless you are running a casino guessing has no place in your business.

3. Take Pictures/Build a Portfolio

Seriously, this may be the single most important thing that you can do with your business, no matter what it is. Other people just don’t do it. They can tell anyone who will listen that they can do so and so. You, on the other hand can whip out your folio or pictures and show beyond the shadow of a doubt that, yes indeed, this is what your lawn care service looks like or here I am taking Mrs. Smith shopping. Just look at her smile! Do the things that others don’t. It will make you unique and the expert leader of your niche.

4. Get Testimonials

Always ask for referrals and for testimonials. These are best done right at the time. Strike while the iron is hot. Everyone means well by leaving it till later, for the ‘right’ time. Truth is, the right time is almost always, right now. One way that I have found to garner the best testimonials is to offer to do a favour for someone free of charge if they will just offer up a few kind words about you and your business. Make these testimonials part of your advertising and part of your folio.

5. Be Congenial (Become a People Person)

I know I said four things to create success for your low cost start-up business, but I wanted to add this bonus secret. People like to do business with people they like. It isn’t that hard to put a smile on your face or in your voice and to ask them some questions about what they would like. Forget about what you can do for a minute and listen to them. Treat them with respect at all times and stay in contact with them. The most successful people are almost never the best people at something. But almost every time they are the nicest ones to be around. Become one of them and your future is secure.
