5 Reasons To Use Hashtags For Business

What is a Hashtag?

Many Business Professionals are using social media in creative ways to boost their businesses. But even if people are social media savvy, one topic—hashtags—seems to be a constant source of confusion.

But why ?

It usually comes down to at least these two things:

  • How do I create a hashtag?
  • Ok, so now I’ve created it. But what do I do with it ?

So Exactly What Is A Hashtag and How Do I Use It ?

3d Image Hashtag Concept Word Cloud Background by David Castillo Dominici, fdpAccording to Oxford Dictionaries, a hashtag is defined as “A word or phrase on social media—Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.—preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic.”

Using Hashtags allows people to follow along with specific conversations online. This is incredibly valuable at events, (#HBS) or when a particular topic is of interest to you (#traffic, #leads).

It can be any word or phrase, so long as it’s preceded by the pound sign (#) and doesn’t include spaces (i.e., #affiliatemarketing, #makeitagreatday).

Capitalization doesn’t matter, though sometimes capitalizing each word in a hashtag phrase makes it easier to read.

For example, on facebook, according to the facebook help center:

“Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your personal Timeline or Page. This helps people find posts about topics they’re interested in.

To make a hashtag, write # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase and add it to your post.

For example:I just saw the cutest puppy! #dogs

When you click a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of posts that include that hashtag. You may also see some related hashtags at the top of the page.

Please keep in mind:

  • A hashtag must be written as a single word, without any spaces
  • You can include numbers in a hashtag, but punctuation and special characters (like $ and %) won’t work
  • You can search for a hashtag using the search bar at the top of any page
  • You’ll only see posts that were shared with you

5 Reasons To Care About Hashtags

1. They keep you updated on trends. Use hashtags to keep current on the latest and greatest in business, health, nutrition, etc.

2. They help expand your network. Search hashtags related to your business, see where you can provide value for others who are seeking help or answers, and make valuable connections.

3. They allow you to seek out conversations related to your business.

4. They let you follow along with what’s happening at live events. Or, if you’re attending a specific event, use hashtags to share your thoughts, interact with others, or even break news for your network.

5. Hashtags actually do play a vital role on social media when used within reason. Hashtags create incentives for people to categorize their posts, which in turn makes it easier for users looking for posts on the same topic to find content. It’s also an easy way to distribute popular news to groups of people who otherwise may not be actively searching for it.

So, are hashtags here to stay?  Yes, I think so. Even though they can be confusing sometimes, you’re now ready to start capitalizing on hashtags and incorporating them into your business-building toolbox.
