Leaping Over the 7 Online Business Hurdles

Yesterday we started with this look at the biggest 7 online business hurdles that have to be overcome to guarantee your success. These hurdles aren’t made of painted wood however, (if they were they would be easier to spot and identify), they are comprised of mental roadblocks and limitations that will slow our progress and eventually stop it altogether. So far we have looked at information overload, being a perfectionist and lack of focus. Today we are going to look at the remaining four of the 7 online business hurdles starting with procrastination.

The 7 Online Business Hurdles cont’d

Online Business Hurdle #4   Procrastination

Of all of the 7 online business hurdles this is the one that used to cause me the most grief. I could find a million excuses to delay starting something and often I would. I then read a great little book entitled Eating the Elephant One Bite At a Time by Brian Klemmer, and I can’t say enough good about that little book. The key to overcoming my procrastination was for Procrastinationme, the realization that any start made was better than no start at all, even if I was going in completely the wrong direction. There are so many lessons to be learned, wondrous sights to behold and unimaginable treasures ahead when we take the wrong road. I have learned that a wrong move can be one of the best things that can happen to a person, as long as we take the lesson from the mistake and put it behind us and move forward. Fear of making a mistake and feelings of overwhelm are almost always the root causes of procrastination. Eliminate them and you are over your hurdle.

Online Business Hurdle #5   Lack Of Resources

When I use the term resources, I am not so much talking just about cash, although that is a resource that is required.  I am referring about arming yourself with the proper tools. Having your own website, on a stable platform that you control, is absolutely essential. Can you imagine setting up your business in a trailer, and then one day waking up to realize that in the middle of the night the owner took the trailer away?  That is exactly what can happen if you don’t own your website. Sure the free ones sound so enticing but believe me, you can pay a heavy price for free. Same thing with auto responders and blogs. Make sure you buy and use the most popular programs and add-ons. Once you have become successful, you too can become leading edge if you want to. Don’t confuse leading edge with bleeding edge.

Online Business Hurdle #6   Poor or Non-existent Relationships

There is a misconception that  if you have an online business, then there is no need to have any personal contact with other people. The myth concludes that all you have to do it present your widget and voila, people send you money. I do admit it’s an interesting concept even if it isn’t rooted in reality. It may come as a shock, though I hope not, that internet businesses operate under the same principles as any other kind of business.

Businesses are built from established relationships. The old axiom is true , ‘people like to do business with people that they like, know and respect. Without established relationships it is very difficult to become a successful internet business person.

Online Business Hurdle #7   Lack Of Follow Through

Failing to call people back, not being on time for meetings, and messing up product deliveries are all the result of not Online Business Hurdles following through. It is critical that you deliver on your commitments. Under promise and over deliver, every time. Making sure that you follow up with prospects, and keeping in touch with buyers to see how they like your products and services are essential. Keeping up with stats on your website is also part of follow through, and so is making the necessary adjustments to continuously improve your site. The key here is to work in, and on, your online business. Don’t pawn off important work on employees or to others when you are the best person to make the right choices.

These aren’t all the hurdles that exist but they are some of the most important ones that you will encounter. If you can overcome all of these 7 Online Business Hurdles you will be well on your way to business success. If you have any other hurdles please send them in so we can share them around.

Procrastination is a thief. What you have to do is put your foot to the throat of that sucker and kill it. Whenever you find yourself making excuses, just turn it around and say “Do it now!” This will shift your mindset right away and you’ll see yourself doing more than you thought you could do.

  3. Ryan Biddulph Says:

Putting off now what needs to be done delays your success…worse than that, it prolongs your failure.

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Simply charge forward when your mind races, when your body hurts, when you are terrified, when you are embarrassed, or upset, and you will quickly kill the habit of procrastinating.

Love the message here Sigrid, thanks for sharing!

Ryan, I couldn’t have said it better. A body in motion tends to stay in motion. A body at rest, tends to stay at rest.
