Dead By Midnight

There’s a reason people do the things they do. Most times. And sometimes, for the oddest reasons. This is a short story about one of the strangest of all.

Harry and Sue were the best of friends, had been for years.  Some folks couldn’t see why they hadn’t married each other, after all there had been a torrid teenage romance, but the two were too wise for that and somehow knew that being married or maybe spending that much time with each other would somehow ruin it, if you know what I mean.

As it was, even as the years past they always seemed to find ways to connect. True they were now both married to other people and living a comfortable walk apart, still their kids went to the same school and were involved in the same sports. They seemed destined to beat the odds in today’s world and to just stay friends till they grew old in their respective rocking chairs. Not that anyone seems to have much time for rocking chairs anymore and that’s part of what we are about to discover.

Harry awoke on this particular morning literally drenched in sweat and breathing hard. His wife suggested that he not wolf down half the three layer chocolate cake that she had baked the previous evening. In her words, only a moron would consume half a warm cake immediately before bedtime. Harry didn’t care about that, he liked chocolate cake a lot and that was evidenced by his no longer slim shadow as he heaved himself out of bed.

He was partway through shaving when it all came rushing back to him in bits and fragments, the frantic screams of Sue and the feeling that he was somehow unable to help her….still he couldn’t see what the scene was in his dream. It was though he was blinded somehow, unable to see. He shook his head to clear it and resolved to call her as soon as the kids were off to school.

His disembodied wife’s voice floated up the stairs reminding him that little Jimmy had to be at school and what the hell was the matter with Sue, she had called and left about three messages on the home phone.  She continued on for several more minutes, covering topics from Becky’s miserable report card to the dog’s appointment with the vet but Harry was no longer listening. His mind was back on the dream.

…To Be Continued…

Till Next Time….
