Fear Stopped Me…Is It Stopping you?

Why Fear Stops Us All

Fear is the common enemy that we all face. And as a wise hillbilly once said, ‘sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you’ that pretty much sums up how most of us live with fear. We can win some of the time but sooner or later we buckle and Old Man Fear triumphs. I’ve always envisioned Old Man Fear as having a wizened face with a pointy nose and bad teeth. Of course he is carrying a thick stick with which he beats those unlucky enough to be caught in his clutches. While you divert him I’m going to stomp on his foot and that will give us time to devise a plan to defeat him.

Old Man Fear Has Six Faces

If we are going to conquer the enemy we need to know as much about him as we possibly can so today we are going to have a look, you and I, at the Six Faces Of Fear. I’m going to list them in the same order as in the blog post. ‘The 31 Major Causes Of Failure Part Six’. That order was established by Napoleon Hill in his book ‘Think and Grow Rich. His determination of their importance was based upon their most common appearance. Almost eighty years have come and gone since the book was first printed but the order still is relevant today.

 The Fear Of Poverty

This is by far the most formidable of all fears and it affects every single human being at one time or another. This fear is only found within the minds of people the world over and cannot exist if the individual has the proper mindset. However, it is so prevalent that it is found within the poorest of people all the way up to the richest of royalty. It owes its power to the impact that it has upon us and its ability to totally alter our personality.

The Face of Poverty (Fear Of)

A person in the throes of this fear will act in a predictable manner. They lose dignity and self-worth and move about as though the weight of the world was on their shoulders. In reality, that is exactly what is happening. Their world has gotten smaller and they feel a deep sense of shame, unable to look others in the eye.  Often it seems as though one thing after another goes wrong and eventually the individual weakens and begins to lose their resolve.

Vicious Cycle

Often the loss of self confidence ends in procrastination, indecision and doubt. As you can well imagine this in turn results in a lack of action and stagnation. The cycle continues to deepen and we find ways to talk ourselves out of making decisions and become ultra-cautious. Eventually, we can’t see any opportunities that will ‘work for us’ and we are convinced we aren’t destined for any more than what we currently have. We have become indifferent and the next step is willingness to accept poverty, to allow the chips to fall where they may and to expect nothing from life.

Nothing for Nothing

All too often that is exactly what we get. Nothing. It isn’t really nothing but its close enough to pass for it. We have lost our enthusiasm, our drive, our determination and we are content to play out our hand, comfortable in our misery. May as well get that big screen TV and the satellite package so we can watch NASCAR and then some IQ challenging reality shows. Or maybe not.

Turn This Train Around

Maybe you don’t want to go in that direction. Maybe you want to revisit the goals and dreams that you used to have. Maybe you should think about the wealth creation process and how you got to be successful in the first place. Because boys and girls, if you have done it once, you can do it again. Fear of Poverty is a mindset, and it is your mind, you can rechoose, push the RESET button and think differently. Thinking differently won’t get it done but it is the first step. The real challenge is going to come with action.

Make a Bold Statement. “I Will…”

That’s when you get to prove to yourself and then to the rest of the world that hell ya, you’re back and are going to get some of what you deserve. Once that decision is made things just seem to come together. Suddenly you can see opportunities for you not just for the crew of the Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers. It really is as simple as that. Once your mind is made up to find success, you will find success but you will have to look for it. And yes, work for it. Nothing worthwhile ever came ashore on the beach of life without some work at getting yourself to the right location. Or if you like, you can call it luck. Hard earned and well deserved luck. After all, you’ve earned it!

Tune in again as we look at the next Killer Basic Fear and how to deke around it, or totally destroy it so it won’t be on your list. As you read through the next few posts, think about which fears you have and think about how they might be holding you back.

This is so true Sigrid. Fear stop all of us period.

Yes it is a vicious cycle, I agree we have to make a bold statement, but at the same time we have to take action to back it up. If you are so down and fearful and not taking action one thing you can do is to be active physically. Go for a run, until you are sweating and tired… just do something to change your physiology that’ll help you to start taking action towards your business goals.

Excellent point Damayanthi. Oftentimes a change of environment or as you suggested a change in physiology breaks our trance-like situation and we can view our fears more objectively. Remember that fear is nothing more than an acronym for false evidence appearing real.

The face of fear that probably hurts/holds back most entrepreneurs is the *Fear of Failure*. “If I don’t try, I won’t fail; and then I can say, ‘well, at least I didn’t fail'”. The true measure of success is how many times you managed to fail, and continued trying. Get up one more time than you get knocked down, and you succeed.

Thanks for sharing Larry. The key is to start and then once started not give up. There is no fear in the present, it’s always the uncertainty of the future that holds the power over us.

Bill, fear of success seems to be rooted to some degree around issues with our self worth and self confidence. We either lack belief in our own abilities to handle success and to a lesser extent a belief that we do not deserve it.
