Feeling Off-Center Or Out of Sorts?

Change Brings Uncertainty: Re-center Yourself

When we go through a period of upheaval it is human nature to feel off balance and out of sorts. We can go through a prolonged period of time where we do not feel centered and everything seems to be more of a struggle than it should be. I believe that it is part of a natural reaction to unfamiliar circumstances.  It makes sense that our past ancestors were best off to ‘lay low’ when in unfamiliar territory till they got the ‘lay of the land’ and their feet back under themselves before striking off boldly in this direction or that.

To be too bold or to do things too rashly could end up costing you your life.  At the same time, remaining in one place could also be disasterous depending on the danger that is being faced.  There is a technique that I was taught years ago from some self-development work that I did with Klemmer & Associates that has helped me and tens of thousands of others in times of turmoil, whether physical, mental or spiritual.  It can also be used when you are facing challenges, when you are under pressure and it can be used to overcome the ruts in life that we can become trapped in.

Ground And Center

What is Centering?

The technique known as ground and center comes primarily from Klemmer and Associate’s use of the martial art form known as Aikido. In Aikido, the center of a being is described as being located several inches below the navel and is the strongest part of the body and the point where all other strength is balanced from. In Japanese it is called hara and it becomes the focal point from which energy flows. This allows the use of centering during any activity and even during times of rest. It is possible to be centered even during driving, sitting, riding a horse or jogging down a forested trail. If you briefly touch your center, you can command your subconscious to concentrate on it even as you return to other tasks.

What is Grounding?

Grounding is more of a mental process that involves you feeling as though you are rooted solidly to the surface you are on. Imagine that you are a mighty oak tree and that your feet are really huge roots that extend far into the ground. They offer you such great stability that you are able to withstand buffeting winds, driving rain and wilting sunshine. Nothing can knock you over or knock you down because you are so firmly rooted. It is this feeling of stability and invulnerability that you are seeking when you say you are grounded.

Ground and Center Combined

When used in combination with each other, ground and center becomes a basic technique that anyone can use in any situation. It is especially effective in moments of great pressure and high stress, and is often employed by people who are trained in it to counteract or alleviate those pressures. It seems odd that in a stressful situation we would respond with an inner calm that slows our speech and helps us focus our thoughts. It is something that requires continual practice, so I would suggest that the next time you have an altercation with a spouse or a co-worker that you use it and consciously bring yourself to ‘ground and center’ before you reply or act in any way. The same tactic would apply with a stressful work situation. Take yourself to ‘ground and center’ and then deal with the pressure, or rather with a pressure reducing activity.  The right activity to utilize will come to you when you are in a ‘ground and centered’ state.
