Four Things That You Cannot Recover In Life

I came across a quote regarding the four things this morning and I would like to share it with you, as well as how I feel that it has touched my life, in the hopes that you may see ways that it has touched yours as well. It’s thought provoking and can bring with it just a touch of regret, but also the realization that today has some sunshine and the future is full of potential.

“The four things that cannot be recovered are: a stone that is thrown, a word that’s been said, the occasion after its been missed and the time after it’s gone.”

Things I Don’t See

There are times when I am so focused on what I don’t have that I can lose sight of the things that I do have and what is right in front of me.  I don’t see the rainbow because I am feeling the wet shirt on my back or I can’t hear the robin’s early morning call because I am thinking about what I have to get done today. I miss seeing a lot of my old friends and having the time to talk to them, but then when I do see one I am always in such a hurry to get on with the things that are overdue that the occasion seems rushed and fleeting.

Things That I Want

I long for the wintry days that allow us to stay inside more, safe and snug from the storm outside, but on that same winter’s day I will long for the warmth of the sun. It does seem to be human nature to long for the things that we don’t have in the moment that we are in. I’m not saying that is necessarily a bad thing, it can be a huge motivator to change the circumstances we are in. I am much more likely to save money towards a vacation that provides a break from the winter rains, than I am to want to save for that same trip in the spring or autumn when the weather is so pleasant.

Things In My Past

The saying about the four things reminds us that there is no way to undo some actions once they have happened and certainly no way to roll back the clock to a time that has passed. More of my personal regrets center around not having done something or not having spoken to someone, rather than around things that I have done or choices that I have made.

When I live in the moment, I derive a great deal more satisfaction from life and I am well aware of the stone being thrown and the word being said. I tend to miss fewer occasions and while I am just as unable to stop the clock, I can relish every minute as it passes through my hands.

So for today, I will be thankful for what I have, where I am, who I am. And for tomorrow, I can be so much better.

Till Next Time….
