List Building Is It Really That Important?

How List Building Worked ‘Against’ You

I used the last headline in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way and only to illustrate an important, well, really a critical point, about the importance of list building and how it is best used in your online business. If you think about the last thing that you bought online while you were part of a mailing list, chances are there was a very familiar pattern there.

online purchasingSome people do impulse buy online, the same as some people impulse buy in the check-out line at the local grocery store. But when you really examine both of those buying decisions, you find that the buyer has some degree of familiarity with the product or the seller of the product. In the grocery store this might be brand recognition or a previous buying experience, whereas online it likely was as a result of the relationship that the owner of the list has made with you over time.

When I think about the products that I have purchased like that (and I encourage you to do the same), I see a repeated trend where I am buying from a person or company that I trust. It may be because they have offered me tips and information via posts or emails that have been of value to me, or that I recognize their name and the fact that they have a reputation for delivering value. That’s what I meant with my comment about it ‘working against you’. The company used list building as a sales tool that helped bring you to a buying decision.

The Importance Of List Building

Can you imagine how difficult it would be for that same person or company to make sales if they didn’t have you and me on an email list, or signed up as opt-in members for their blog? It would be many times more difficultlist building and ridiculously more expensive to reach the same audience with their message. Because we are a part of their list, they have the opportunity to send us information of value that helps to create a relationship and builds trust.

This is the nub of the importance of list building and why it trumps everything else that you can do to your website to help you create sales. Nothing else gives you the same ability to build trust as delivering value to your list. When you do that, you will begin to attract others to you. Trusted people are liked, respected and referred to.

People do business with people that they trust. And people develop trust in people that treat them fairly, respect them and bring something of value to them that helps them solve their problems. If you do that, you can fill in the numbers on a blank check.

Till Next Time….

You are absolutely right. I would never buy anything from a company I do not trust. There are so many people that are scammers. Example: I buy all my Health products from a company I trust. Also some other products through a a company that I have been dealing with for years. I have a list of clients that trust me because I have developed an ongoing relationship with them.

I agree Dagmar that the critical part of any relationship is to keep in touch. It sounds like you have developed a relationship with your clients who know, like and trust you.
