Picking The Perfect (fill in the blank)

As I was watching kids pour off the school buses at the corn maze and pumpkin patch this morning, I couldn’t help but get caught up in their excitement. For them it is a win being out of the classroom in the first place, so anything that happens beyond that is definitely a bonus, and if it turns out to be fun that’s a triple bonus for sure.

They get excited about the prospect of feeding the pigs and going on a hayride, but all those things pale in comparison to being able to pick their own pumpkin that will be used for carving a jack ‘o’ lantern for Halloween.

picking the perfect

I’m always intrigued by the pumpkin selection process, and as a consummate marketer, I definitely want to know what triggers the buyer’s decision. It’s amazing when the tractor pulling the hayride trailor stops, and every one hops off and starts heading to where they believe is the perfect spot to begin picking the perfect pumpkin. Luckily for us marketers, there are almost as many perfect pumpkins as there people wanting them.

I learned by watching children select pumpkins that perfection is very much in the eye of the beholder. What appeals to onepicking the perfect1 may not appeal to another. Some want their pumpkin a perfect deep orange, while others, knowing Halloween is still 3 weeks away, want a pumpkin with some green still on it so it isn’t over-ripe by Halloween. Some want short squat pumpkins, some long thin ones for big faces, some want the biggest one that their parents can carry and others are thrilled with tiny ones.

It occurred to me that pretty much everything that we choose in life follows this same line of reasoning. Just like picking a perfect pumpkin there are a million different perfect mates for us, millions of jobs and businesses, millions of shoes. And in each case they can be just as right as if there was only one perfect one. You see, each of us has a different idea of perfect, whether we are talking a mate, a type of shoe, a pumpkin or a cell phone plan. What works for you may not work for me, and vice-versa. It is one of the great truths of the universe that there is a perfect match for each of us and we only have to look in the right place to find it.

For some reason children are quicker to make their selection in picking the perfect pumpkin, there is something about the sureness of being young, and not having made a million or two mistakes yet in their lives. We as adults would do well to look at how the children make choices, and have the same degree of faith in allowing things to sort themselves out, if we can only just let go and trust ourselves to make the right choice. Next time you’re picking the perfect choice, just clear you mind and let the Universe bring you the answer. Because it will. Every time.

Till Next Time….
