Your Reputation Means Everything In Marketing

Market Your Reputation

Last night was the year-end wrap up party for everyone who had worked at McNab’s Corn Maze over the past season. It was a hugely successful year and a fantastic party. The wrap up party is held every year at Yellow Point Lodge. It really is the crowning jewel of Yellow Point, and the reputation that it has as a secluded place where everyone is treated equally is known far and wide. The second generation owner, Richard Hill, is the consummate host making everyone welcome there, from the foreign princesses to the local paupers. It is renowned for being a place where you can come and relax in whatever way suits you. After lunch on some days, you nearly need ear plugs to counteract the snoring coming from every corner. Corporate execs, society icons and common folk alike unwind in the warm comfortable glow from the huge fireplace ignoring the dreary November mists outside.

You need look no further than the auto industry to see stark examples of the value of reputation. After the second world war, the American car was considered the highest quality that money could buy, and anything made in Japan had the reputation of being inferior quality. That turned around dramatically in the 1980’s when the continued poor quality of the American cars ruined the fine reputation that they had enjoyed, and they lost it to their Japanese competitors. In the last few years things are slowly changing back again as the American quality continues to improve, and now it is the Japanese who are suffering reputation problems.

The court of public opinion is fickle, and once changed it is difficult although not impossible to regain the good reputation that has been lost. I’ve used the example of Japanese manufacturing, but there are many others. Harley-Davidson, Apple and Chrysler are just some of the better known companies that have significantly improved their image and reputations by simply being better year after year. They know that it takes time to build a good name, and you can lose it almost overnight. Once lost, it will take more than twice as long to rebuild it the second time around.

Till Next Time….
