Sunday! Dad’s Making Breakfast…Who Wants Pancakes?

Sundays Are Special

Dad’s Making Breakfast…Who Wants Pancakes? That’s the words that you will hear most Sundays around here when things are relatively normal. Most days I am up and gone before anyone else is up, but not on Sundays. Sunday is the day that everyone gets to sleep in a bit, myself till nearly 7 this morning,  and sort of have a relaxing start to the day. Those are the days when I get to make breakfast and give Mom a rest and everyone a treat.

I might grumble a bit and pretend to be cross,  but in reality I love the opportunity to do this very simple thing. I like to trick it up a bit and add extra ingredients to make them something other than ordinary. Today I was low on the demarara sugar that I usually use, so I decided to add a dollop of Maple Syrup to give them a touch more flavor. I don’t know if any of you people have tasted pure Canadian Maple Syrup,  but if you haven’t I would suggest that you try one of nature’s most delicious treats. It tastes nothing like the cloying, too sweet corn fructose laden commercial offerings with artificial maple flavour.

It isn’t that my pancakes are the best ones ever made, in fact they are often a bit burnt and somewhat mangled, but no one cares.  They aren’t being graded on their appearance, it’s all about flavour and the fact that Dad made them. And for me it’s the opportunity to do something that I can’t do the rest of the week. And really that’s what it’s all about. To take the opportunities when they come along and to not let life slide on by.

It doesn’t have to be a trip to Disneyland or a major league baseball game to be a memorable moment. If you ask almost anyone what their happiest childhood memories were, they almost invariably mention something that they got to do with their parents. It could be baking pies or having working in a garden with mom, fishing or spending a Saturday morning with Dad at work, it really doesn’t matter. For most of us it’s a time when we had a chance to be part of all that mattered at that moment.

If we look for those moments there are more of them than you or I would have thought. They don’t have to be long or well planned. Spontaneous and spur of the moment activities are often the best and they don’t require planning, forethought or much money. A family picnic, a night around a campfire or make some popcorn and put on a movie at home. It’s definitely more challenging in this day of instant communication to get any two people together for activities,  but I would suggest that you have to go with who you have on hand rather than waiting till you have a full complement of family members. Past experience hasn’t shown that being a family  dictator that demands everyone attend all functions works very well. Surprise, surprise.

The important thing is to just seize the day. Don’t wait for the uncertainty of tomorrow. We need to live life a little closer to nature and with a little more patience, understanding and appreciation. I, for one, appreciate you for reading this and sharing my Sunday. Have a good one.

Till Next Time….

I agree, my kids remember the simple things that we do more readily than a onetime trip or other such things. And when I do get around to making pancakes they go through them fairly quickly. I’ll have to try the real Maple Syrup trick.

Bill, I’ll bet that they sure do. I think that so often what they really want is just some of our time and love. Maple syrup, Yumm
