The 5 Laws That Create The Secret Of Success

Bob Burg and John David Mann co-authored a small book with a huge message called the ‘The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea .’ A very dear friend of ours gave a copy of this book to my wife a while back. In the accompanying note on the book she described my wife as a ‘go-giver.’ She also thanked her for her persistence, heart and sense of adventure. She was right on all three counts. I want to share a little of that books message with you today. It’s timeless and works under any circumstances, sometimes astonishingly well. 

 


 

As a test, I will challenge you to do this and I will do the same. For the next week go out of your way to give something of value to three people each day. When I say something of value I don’t mean a million dollars or even your spare Ferrari. Although those have value, so too does a well placed compliment, a helping hand or a few minutes of your time to genuinely ask about them. With you listening attentively to them of course. You will be amazed at what you learn. And I’m betting, so will I. Let’s get rolling shall we?

 

The First Law: Value

Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment’

If you continually expect to get more back than you pay you are going to diminish your true value. In ‘The 31 Major Causes of Failure Part Two’ I discussed the ‘something for nothing’ concept that dogs our society today. We truly have become a culture of bargain basement shoppers in so many ways. I recall Ray Higdon saying that he used to be a consummate ‘bargain hunter’ till he realized that in order to get full value you have to give full value. Burg and Mann take it a step further by explaining that you have to give more than full value in order to increase your ‘true worth’

 

The Second Law: Compensation

Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them’

They go on further to point out that your compensation is directly proportional to the number of people that you touch. When you stop and think about that suddenly the ridiculously large salaries of corporate heads, professional athletes and actors start to make sense. They truly do touch the lives of a lot of people and they bring value to so many people’s lives as well. Think of ways that you can increase the number of people that your life brings value to. Donating and volunteering are two great ways to do that.

 

The Third Law: Influence

Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first’

If you look at this closely you can see it’s a direct reflection of the law of reciprocity. When others feel that you are more interested in them than in yourself they allow you to have influence in their lives. Clearly you have their best interests at heart and are working at addressing them in preference to your own. People are drawn to those that give of themselves, it’s impossible to turn away. Think of times where someone has given you something in a selfless fashion. Remember how you felt, the kinship that you felt with that person, the influence that they had at that moment. You can create it. Over and over again.

 

The Fourth Law: Authenticity

The most valuable gift that you have to offer is yourself’

To be the success that you aspire to, to wield the influence and to increase your true worth you have to be yourself. It won’t work if you are just a puppet of an idea or if you are just acting the part of being someone you are not. Pretending to be genuinely interested won’t bring you compensation or influence. Don’t keep score of what you have done for whom and when. Just be yourself and find ways to give value to others without the expectation of getting something in return. And remember, many times the thing or things we get back are like the tip of an iceberg in respect to their value. Some advice I have been given in my life has and will continue to produce value as I use it time and time again.

 

The Fifth Law: Receptivity

The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving’

Since childhood we have heard the expression that it is ‘better to give than to receive’. Burg and Mann make the excellent point that this cannot be so. In every act of giving there has to be an act of receiving. If everyone tried to give but no one wanted to receive it couldn’t possibly work. As they point out the very act of giving requires one to be open to receiving as well. Think about it for a minute. When you give you receive a warm happy feeling and you also receive that moment of influence as well. Without your thinking about it you have entered into the transaction of giving and receiving. By staying consciously open to receiving, by staying receptive, you will be ready to accept compensation when it comes your way. And to be able to accept in whatever form it comes in.
