They Deliver…Frying Pans?


They Will Buy It, If You Deliver

I have to relay this short story about innovative marketing and service delivery that I just came across a day or so ago. There are about a thousand RV’s and travel trailers onsite at the Sunfest and a similar number of campers and tents. It’s a no-brainer that some of these people will have forgotten one or more of the ‘essential items’ that make camping more enjoyable.


Knowing this and being something of a marketing genius, the manager of the local Canadian Tire secured space for a large display booth, right above the show grounds. (For my American friends, Canadian Tire is fairly similar to your Target stores found throughout the U.S.) The manager then stocked his shelves with the kinds of items you would use in a typical campsite  –  propane lights and stoves, BBQ’s, folding chairs, tables and so on.


Marketing And Sales Includes Delivery

The coup de gras to his marketing plan is his delivery system. If you want to purchase an item that they don’t have available at the booth, they will bring it out for you FREE on the next delivery from the store. Deliveries are made every two hours, so you never have to go long without whatever it is that you need.

Now as fate would have it, we had forgotten to pack a frying pan,  so I thought that I would wander up to see if they had any. They didn’t, but were happy to bring one from the store. One of the girls I spoke to said that she had just looked for them online and that the pan would be fourty dollars, but the other girl there said that she was sure they had more cost efficient models than that one.


Delivered Hot Off The Press

A few hours later I wandered back up the hill to the Canadian Tire tent, and was just in time to see them wheeling the next delivery off the truck. There, perched proudly on top of the load, was a gorgeous twelve inch frying pan. I grabbed it and flipped it over to see the price. I got some sticker shock alright as it was marked clearance at $14.99. What a deal, what a deal. It’s actually a top end Cusinart frying pan that would be fourty dollars if not on sale.



Just In Time Delivery Delights Customers

Needless to say, I was pretty happy. Now Maddy could have her pancakes and I could have my eggs. If you think that didn’t reaffirm my faith in Canadian Tire and their ability to provide service and delivery well above the norm, you would be mistaken.

Anticipating a need and then filling that need is the epitome of service. Whenever someone is looking for a specific product or service, and you can provide it almost immediately, then I think that is, in many ways, more effective than if it was there all along. The supplier of that good or service has immediately created goodwill with the customer who is thankful that they have solved their problem. Then the ‘Law of Reciprocity’ kicks in and guess what? The fulfilled customer will spend more. It’s the craziest thing, but that’s how it works. The more satisfied someone is, the more they will spend.
