How To Avoid Creating Internet Marketing Disasters

Five Internet Marketing Disasters

1. Not Building a List

You hear this over and over again ad nauseum. And it is true. Your list is your biggest asset. Almost ALL of your marketing effort and expenses will be wasted if you don’t have a way to build a list. Commonly used list autoresponders are AWeber and GetResponse. This is the most common of all the internet marketing disasters, and one that I was certainly guilty of when I started out. I just thought more customers would always show up. Wrong!

2. Spamming

A very common internet marketing disaster is being one of the people that are too enthusiastic about your products or company. As a result, novice marketers (and some veterans) will spam internet marketer’s forums, social networks and blogs. This is a huge turnoff. People want to be informed, not sold. If you can solve people’s problems, you can market effectively. If you can’t, you will have a disaster.

3. Using Pay Per Click (without learning the tricks)

Google Adwords and other PPC programs tend to be complex. Setting up an account and a marketing campaign is easy, (and so is spending your money), but to maximize it is another matter. Remember, you are competing with a lot of experience marketers who know a lot more about PPC than you. You can either learn to do it on your own, or enlist the help of someone to help that understands PPC and can guide you through the process.

4. Not Understanding Traffic Conversion

Driving traffic to your website is one thing, converting visitors to prospects, leads or customers is anotherinternet marketing disasters matter altogether.  If you don’t have a highly effective converting website, much of your traffic can be wasted. You have to ensure that you are driving targeted traffic to your website. Simply having visitors is not going to help you with your conversions if they are not interested in what you have to offer. Split testing and tracking conversions is paramount to internet marketing success.

5. No Clearly Defined Target Market

This is one of the most common internet marketing disasters that you will see, and it happens all the time. You will see websites that use the shotgun approach, where they are targeting everyone, and selling them everything, and the result is that they are selling nothing to anyone. People look at those types of websites and become confused and move on. Then at the other end of the spectrum, you have websites that are so vague you don’t have a clue what they are selling. A well laid out high conversion website is information rich with topical resources and a clear message that is targeting a specific audience. If you want to market a new brand of moss killer, there is no value in trying to target people who live in apartments. They don’t care about the moss in their lawns. They don’t have a lawn. So why should they care about the effectiveness of your moss killer? You get my point. Make sure your website clearly defines your target market, and then serves them and serves them well.

A Final Word On Internet Marketing Disasters

In almost all cases your website can recover from a disaster unless you have been guilty of spamming or fraudulent marketing. Almost all other problems can be overcome by changing your tactics, and doing the things that help to create value for your targeted market. If you aren’t providing value for your customers, you won’t have a business. It really is that simple.
