Turn Away, You’re Better Than That

Sometimes It Is Best To Turn Away

Every now and then in life (and in business), you are going to come across a situation that is just not going to resolve itself or lend itself to a solution. Often these very frustrating situations can be with family and friends, people who really know how to get under your skin.

The natural reaction is to stay there with them, exchanging shot for shot like an old Ali-Frazier fight where neither side is willing to give an inch. After awhile it has to be apparent to all concerned, and especially to anyone watching, that this is not going to be resolved in an acceptable way.

This is the time for you to show that you are bigger than your adversary, at least insofar as your personal growth is concerned. It is time for you to turn away because as the old Doug and The Slug’s song says, ‘You’re Better Than That’.

When To Turn Away

To turn away does not mean you are weaker, or that you are caving in to the other side. It means that you are mature enough to realize that nothing good will come from your staying and continuing the back and forth with the other party. There is a time and a place for negotiation and healthy debate, but all too often we allow things to degrade into mudslinging and name calling that drives both parties further apart. Long before you get to the level of two opposing political opponents take the high road and turn away.

The same strategy should be used whenever you come across a position that is not defensible or acceptable to you. Don’t appear to support things that you cannot tolerate by maintaining your presence. If you can do something to right a situation, then do it. If you cannot, then turn away and leave it behind you.  You will feel better about yourself, and soon have a reputation as a person who won’t accept injustice. There are a lot worse things that you could have a reputation about.

Hey Sigrid, it’s definitely best to turn away in these type of situation. Why waste time arguing with another if both of you aren’t really listening, which is usually the case. thanks for sharing!

Excellent point Sherman. If no one is listening, there is very little point in talking.

Just like you and Sherman said, turning away sometimes can be the best thing to do. What’s the point of wasting your time going around in circle when there is no end in sight?

Turning away is actually a strength because it shows you to be the bigger person.

    Thanks for sharing buddy!

Far and away Sigrid, being non resistant is the NUMBER 1 source of my peace of mind and happiness.

People always remark how I am smiling most of the time, and how I am traveling all over, and being happy, and jolly…..I do not fight.

It does not matter if online friends or strangers engage me; I do not fight.

It does not matter if my family or offline friends engage me, tweaking me – and trust me, they do!! lol – I do not fight.

Most people are confused, or stunned, when I do not engage. Weird behavior to them.

In every case these folks fade away, and their quarrels too..and I remain at peace, and happy.

Awesome post buddy, thanks for sharing!

There is never a winner in an argument as each person only believes their side so it is not worth the time and effort of continuing. Better to move and enjoy your day.
