Unique Marketing Needs Unique Approach

Last night I witnessed an impressive display of unique marketing that works ridiculously well even in a market that is saturated beyond belief.  I am referring to the annual event that is better known as All Hallow’s Eve or Halloween. We hardly live in what would classify as a metropolitan area, but there are still hundreds of options for parents of small children on Halloween.  And in five years out of seven, Halloween is destined to fall on a school night, so there is even less time available because of school night bedtimes.

Normally we have a bonfire and fireworks at the farm on Halloween night, but this year torrential rains caused the event to be pretty much cancelled. We got the fire going ok, but there weren’t a lot of attendees, so we elected to save the fireworks for a more participant favourable evening.  That turned out to be last night. And it worked out remarkably well.

Unique marketing

There are a lot of advantages when you turn to unique marketing. For one thing, you have very limited competition. On Halloween night, there are real limitations on the children and parent’s available time, and if they elect to attend the bonfire, it is not likely that they will be able to stay very long. Last night had no such restrictions as there was pretty well nothing else going on. There also was the unique marketing advantage of being on a Saturday night, so there was zero school pressure or any other concerns that a weekday night brings with it.

In fact, it worked so well that I want to propose the same thing for next year so we can appeal to as many people as possible. It totally eliminates parents having to make either/or decisions for their children. It allows all of us to spend time with our families on Halloween as well if we choose to. The overall success of this event made me think that the same principles of unique marketing can also be applied to niche marketing.

First, look at how you can alter your marketing situation so that you aren’t going head to head with well financed and sophisticated competition.  It makes no sense to bang your head against the wall when you should be using your head to sidestep the competition, and use unique marketing strategies to set yourself apart. If you don’t stand a chance against the other players, it may be time to play in a different league or under a different set of rules. Use your situation to your advantage and offer something that no one else is offering.

    Look how our kids are being brainwashed on TV with Advertising. It might be a short term solution, but I think if it is worthwhile, to take it easy and steady and let a product speak for itself. The same with a great Business.
