Want To Grow Your Business Fast-Become Teachable

Why Being Teachable Makes Such A Huge Difference

Be Teachable: Always Be A Student

teachableIn life we have a lot of teachers and coaches, mentors and idols. At least we do if we are some of the lucky ones. The less fortunate are the ones that already know it all (or at least believe that they do) or those that just don’t have time to learn. (they believe that they are too busy).  Truth is, we are all busy. Very busy. But doing what? And to what avail?

If you’re like me and I am betting we aren’t too different, then you likely have a few minutes in every day that could be spent being involved in more productive activities. I’m not saying we are lazy, just that we could refocus on other things like learning and becoming more teachable. There are a ton of good teachers out there. I truly believe that I have something to learn from every single person no matter what their lot or station in life.

6 Ways To Become More Teachable

1. Live In The Moment

Just by staying where you are at and not allowing your mind to wander can do wonders for your ability to learn, self critique and correct.

2. Ask For A Review

I’m not talking about a formal one (although that’s fine too), but more asking a friend or a peer or a workmate for a frank appraisal of the work that you are doing or the business that you are conducting.

3. Offer, And Ask For, Tips And Advice

By offering we are inviting a response, through the law of reciprocity. Asking for advice is a request that very few people advicewill turn down as everyone has an opinion. Remember though, if you don’t want the answer, don’t ask the question.

4. Challenge Yourself

Set ambitious goals and look for ways to continually improve. If you are actively looking for answers on how can I do this better or how can I do it faster, you are going to become more teachable and you are going to learn and grow.

5. Dare To Compare

Yes, we all run our own race but we need to compete to bring out the best in us, even if it is only to compete with ourselves. Take an honest look at what you are doing and what others are doing. What techniques of theirs can you learn and incorporate into what you are doing to improve your results.

6. Results Matter (some would argue that they are all that matters)

The result of an action is the mark that you are given for that action and how it was carried out. If you sloughed off and didn’t put in a lot of effort, odds are the result reflects that. Let your results be your teacher and allow yourself to become more teachable by learning from our results.  It is said that a good goaltender can put bad goals behind him and simply play in the moment, and while I agree with that I think that there is a danger in glossing over your defeats and ignoring them. We learn from our mistakes (hopefully). Often, it is our mistakes that are the best teachers, and the lessons that we learn from them are lessons that stick with us, sometimes for life.

What techniques do you use to become more teachable and to improve on the results that you get in business, on the job, within a relationship or in your journey of self-growth?

Shoot me a comment and let me know what’s working for you. After all, I want to learn too. And you look like a terrific teacher.

As a teachable student, never be afraid to ask questions. That is why your mentor is there for you to answer the questions you are unsure about. Living in the moment is something I’ve never done in the past but now, I’m living in the moment every single day. Awesome post Sigrid!

Hey Sigrid, this is another topic that a lot of people in home business overlook. Being Teachable will make a difference in your business. I believe learning to ask empowering questions helps a lot. As you said, asking for reviews, tips, and asking yourself how can you get better will show how teachable you are. Thanks for sharing!

You raise an interesting point Sherman. It is very common for people involved in home businesses to avoid this necessary step. For some reason we feel that if we are working from home, or at home, the same standards of excellence don’t apply.

I am doing 3 each day Sigrid, on twitter, and now I ask questions on Facebook as well.

I noted my Adsense earnings moved a bit slowly last month; I hopped on Facebook a few minutes ago and asked how people boost their earnings, because learnings precedes earnings lol.

    Thanks buddy!

Love this quote Ryan! ” learnings precedes earnings”

The example you gave about hopping on Facebook and asking questions shows that you are open and teachable.
