Get What You Want – Using The Law of Reciprocity

The Law of Reciprocity: The Link To Get What You Want

This is the fourth part of a six part series on how to get what you want. In the first part we looked the act of asking for what you want, and how that can manifest itself. In Part Two we examined the power of focus, and how focusing on your want can help you to get what you want. In Part Three we explored Goal Setting and Taking Action. Here in part four we are going to go through the Law of Reciprocity, what it is, and how it works to help you get what you want.

The Law of Reciprocity is ancient and is talked about in the old scriptures, where man is chided for his actions and told by God that ‘as you sow, so shall you reap.’ Most of today’s youth may not know too much about sowing and reaping, but even they can easily grasp the concept that if you do good things, then good things are likely to happen to you. On the other hand, if you are continually taking advantage of people, or being dishonest, it is probable that you are the recipient of the same. Those are examples of the Law of Reciprocity in action.

It is a bit of difficult concept for some people who are unused to giving or being generous, because it seems to run get what you wantagainst their nature. But I assure you that there is no greater feeling in the world than being able to help someone else out, and to satisfy one of their wants or needs. I just recently heard of a person who returned to their vehicle in a parking lot to find that there was a note on their windshield. The note stated that there was a receipt attached for tires for their truck, that had been paid for by a person who saw they needed tires to replace the worn ones on their truck. The note went on to say, that all the good Samaritan asked, was that they in turn do some good for someone else,  because that was what had happened to him that caused him to buy the tires.

This law is one of my favorites, not because it’s the best way to get what you want, but it’s the most satisfying, and isn’t really intended to even get you what you want. If that is hard to understand, then you may not be that familiar with the Law of Reciprocity and how it works. Basically, the law states that if you give something to someone you will always get it back. It may not come in a form that you expect ,and it certainly may not come from a source that you would expect. Reciprocity is that you get back what you give. You can’t wait for things to happen, so, step out on a limb and be the first one to give.

A great quote describes the Law of Reciprocity perfectly: ‘If you help enough people get what they want you will ultimately get what you want.’ Give and give and give and when you least expect it, the returns will come flooding back in. Enjoy the giving and think of all the good you are doing and sooner or later, it will come back to you.
