What’s The Best Time To Do It?

This Is By Far The Best Time To Do It

Some of you might be wondering what ‘it’ is. And I am going to reply rather flippantly that it really doesn’t matter. I have a quote that I made up that states, ‘In a choice between doing it now and some other time, now is usually the best option’. In reality, I mostly made this quote up for myself  because I can be one of the world’s most accomplished procrastinators. I fully subscribe to the Samuel Clemon’s quote that ‘Idleness cannot be fully enjoyed unless you have plenty to do’.

take Action

Now while that might seem a great axiom to live by, I have found it is better used in jest and the best way to attack the ‘to do’ pile is to get right at it. Use the carrot and stick approach if you have to, lure yourself into action with the promise of treats, but just realize that the best time to do it is now. There are a few exceptions to the rule, and common sense (despite its infrequent visits) should prevail in order to not let hasty actions and decisions rule the day. The best time to swerve off the road (if there is such a thing as a good time) is likely not now, so for goodness sakes don’t do it. Use the same good judgment around hot stoves, thin ice and thunderstorms. (Benny Franklin not withstanding)

The Best Time To Do It Is Now

the best time to do itHowever, now is the best time to do it when you are left a voice mail from a prospective client, a planning session with your team and an opportunity to right a wrong. I have to interject at this point that while two wrongs don’t make a right, two rights will send you back in the direction that you came from. Whenever I am faced with an unpleasant task, I have found that the best time to do it is right then and there. Very often I have been pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined it, or that it took much less time that I had thought it would.  best time to do it

Action produces action, and the rewards are often greater for those who are in action as opposed to those that are at rest. It is a lot easier to get run down by the luck truck (my colorful descriptor of being fortunate) if you are able to run in front of it on the street, than if you sit on your porch with your behind in the chaise lounge. Nature rewards immediacy. So too does business. As Ann Sieg says: “Business loves speed”. Don’t continue to pay the high price that stagnation brings.

Try this simple exercise. Say to yourself that the best time to do it is now. And then do the first three things that come to mind that you have been putting off, or that you know you should have done before now. I can assure you that you will feel a lot better once they have been dealt with. Go!  the best time to do it

You are right. If you postpone something it might never be done, so do it! We need a reminder sometimes.

    Exactly right Dagmar!
