Another Messaging Service? Why Can’t I Talk To A Real Person?

Are you getting as annoyed with this as I am? It is becoming almost impossible to get a live human on the other end of the phone. And if you have the good fortune, (and I hesitate to always call it good fortune) to speak to someone, I can virtually guarantee that it is someone who I would have trouble understanding. Is it just me? Am I the only one that is linguistically challenged? Especially when it comes to picking up the nuances of ‘what the heck are they saying’?

Why can’t I talk to a real personWhy can’t I talk to a real person? Ah yes, because the company or whomever I am calling is saving money, being cost effective. And those savings, in turn, are being passed along to me. Now I don’t mind that so much when it comes to trying to repair my lawnmower (though in this throwaway world we live in, why should I bother?), but when it comes to trying to contact my insurance broker or health specialist it cranks my shorts. It really irks me that I have to punch the phone keypad through thirteen choices only to find out that they will answer calls only between 7 and 11 am local time in Katmandu but yes sir, we sure appreciate your patronage. Right!

C’mon Guys, Why Can’t I Talk To A Real Person?

They could really care less, as long as I continue to make my purchases from their store or brokerage or whatever. They are counting on the fact that I won’t be so inconvenienced as to vote with my feet and go somewhere else. In some cases you can’t go anywhere else, they are the only game in town. And the sad truth of it all is that If I chose to go to a competitor, I will soon be asking the same question, ‘Why can’t I talk to a real person’?

In truth, this is only the tip of the iceberg. In our ‘race to the bottom’ and our never ending quest to provide the lowest prices, we have to expect that customer service is a luxury item and one that can be easily forsaken. A local appliance company is making the extraordinary claims that they will not sell you crap even if it is under a well respected brand name, that they will answer the phones at the store during business hours, and that they stand behind everything that they sell. You do not have to wait for a contract service repair guy to show up who is being paid as little as possible, and who has zero interest in whether you are inconvenienced or not with your dishwasher not working.

Further to that, they offer in store financing and don’t sell your contract to some third party, who like the other thirdwarranty contract party that has the warranty contract could give a fat rat’s whether your machine works or not, as long as the monthly payments keep rolling out of your bank account. That’s a refreshing change, and one that I hope the local consumers will support. If they don’t, well, we get what we pay for.

If the only answer to my question of, ‘Why can’t I talk to a real person’?, is that I will have to pay a bit more for the product or service that I am getting, then I would suggest I would be more than willing to do so. I wonder how many others of you out there would be willing to do the same? Raise your hands. Ah, only three of you. Maybe that’s why I can’t talk to a real person. Just a thought.

You are so right Sigrid. I had a situation where my suitcase was lost on my return home. I tried to get a number at a local airport to find out if my suitcase had been found and I got the run around. When I was lucky to talk to someone, their answer was …”how should I know, i am in India”
By the way, this is a small airport in a small town. You get this all the time. People get so discouraged.

That must have been a frustrating situation for you Dagmar. I think that sometimes these big corporations forget that customer service is key.
